Manual calculation of fertility [message #12289]

I want to calculate age specific fertility rate using DHS data. I got number of birth by age group but not able to get exposure of women (denominator to calculate ASFR).Also, it should be manual computation because i want to understand the process of calculation. Please suggest manual process of computation.

Note Don't suggest already created program which gives direct estimate because i want to learn

You can look at the Guide to DHS statistics, pages 27-27 (www.dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/DHSG1/Guide_to_DHS_Statistics_2 9Oct2012_DHSG1.pdf).

You can download a SPSS code from the DHS website - it should help you underestand how exposure is computed.
