Hello,

I would like to ask 2 questions:

1. Is there documentation for recent continuous Peru surveys? When I downloaded the individual recodes there were no word documents attached which usually are included in the .zip with country specific variables. This is for all surveys between 2009 and 2012.

2. I would like to make myslef familiar with that documentation because I am working with the reproductive calendar for Peru and I cannot figure out what a method type "E" means in the vcal_1. Could you advise?

Many thanks,
Ewa

Dear User,
A response from Dr. Shea Rutstein:
Quote:

Go to the INEI website at http://iinei.inei.gob.pe/microdatos/ , select the tab "Documentación", then select the drop down box for "Encuesta Demográfica y de Salud Familiar-ENDES", the year (año) desired and then período (Unico). A selection of documentation (in Spanish) will be presented. The letter "E" in the reproductive calendar means pregnant "embarazada".

Thank you!

Thank you very much for the reply and link to the documentation.

Regardin the letter "E" in the calendar, could you specify then what the difference is between "E" and "P"? Usually "P" stand for pregnant but in the case of calendar for Peru both appear, sometimes within the same individual, for example (copied from the calendar):

*********1333EE333888333EEE3338833388333BPPPPPPPPP000000

in case of this individual there are both "E" and "P".

I will be grateful for your help.
Ewa

Dear User,
Dr. Rutstein responded as follows:
In the raw data in Peru, E is pregnancy. However, in the recode file in Peru 2009, the E means emergency contraception (day after pills). The correspondence to the 2009 questionnaire for contraception is:

acalstrs = "NET0345~712KLX6~J89MR~? 123456789CFADX~~~Z?X0? 123456789ABCDEFGJKX?~~~~~~~";
vcalstrs = "BPT0123456789WNALCFEM~? 123456789CFADWàáâK?X0? 123456789ABCDEFGJKX?~~~~~~~";

The first part of the string up to the ? is for calendar column 1 (births, terminations, pregnancies, contraception), the second part up to the ? is for reason for discontinuation of contraception, the third part is for marriage, and the rest for source of contraception.

Thank you very much for that clarificaiton, this is very useful. My last question regarding this is that this clarification refers to Peru 2009. Is it the same for the subsequent surveys (i.e. 2010, 2011, 2012)? I encountered this issue while using the 2012 DHS and would like to make sure that this applies to all subsequent rounds.

Dear User,
Dr. Rutstein's response:
Quote:

I think it does. Can check the 2010-2014 codes to see if they were different in the questionnaire. If not, then they should be the same. We do not have recode apps for later surveys since we were providing mostly technical support.

Thank you!

Thank you very much for your help.

I had one additional question which I have posted in one of the other, duplicated topics. I apologise for this mess, but I just wanted to make sure that it has been noted. I copy-paste it here again. I would be grateful for your help.

"I have one additional question regarding the Peru DHS 2012.The variable v017 states that the beginning of the calendar for that survey is 1273. After I recoded the calendar it did not match my furhter calculations. I have checked that the previous Peru DHS 2011 had the same value of that variable (v017==1273) which makes me think that there might have been some mistake made with regard to that variable for 2012 survey. According to my calculations the beginning of the calendar for year 2012 should be 1285. Would you be able to advise me on that matter?"

Many thanks,
Ewa

Yes, it should be 1285, not 1273 for Peru 2012. Thank you for pointing that out
