Dear DHS, I hope you can help me with the set of questions below relating to intimate partner violence, physical and sexual violence, and non-partner violence. I am looking to view the data for several countries.

1) Where do I see the answers to this question, when it was asked?
o (Does/did) your (last) husband ever do any of the following things to you: a) Slap you? b) Twist your arm or pull your hair? c) Push you, shake you, or throw something at you? d) Punch you with his fist or with something that could hurt you? e) Kick you, drag you or beat you up? f) Try to choke you or burn you on purpose? g) Threaten or attack you with a knife, gun, or any other weapon? h) Physically force you to have sexual intercourse with him even when you did not want to? i) Force you to perform any sexual acts you did not want to?
o I understand this is D105a-i and is only answered if V044 = 1, meaning a DV module was completed. Can you confirm?

2) Can I use the below parts of question dv06 if looking for sexual violence only?
o D105 h and i? (coming from question dv06 h and i)

3) In which column(s) do I find the answer to this question in the downloaded data in SPSS?
o For emotional violence. (Does/did) your (last) husband ever: a) Say or do something to humiliate you in front of others? b) Threaten to hurt or harm you or someone close to you? c) Insult you or make you feel bad about yourself?

-question related to 3: I see for India, part c from above question about insulting was asked based on the 2005-06 survey report. However, the questionnaire I have for the DV module only has question DV05 parts a and b, but not c. Does this mean India had a different version of the DV module done? Is this the case for other countries?

4) In which column do I find the answer to this question in the downloaded data in SPSS?
o For non-partner violence. From the time you were 15 years old, has anyone [other than your (current/last) husband] hit, slapped, kicked, or done anything else to hurt you physically?

Following is a response from Senior DHS Data Processing Specialist, Noureddine Abderrahim:

1- These questions correspond to the variables D105A .. D105N. However, not in the same order. V044 = 1 means that the domestic violence module was completed.
2- DV06 is not a valid question.
3- These are questions DV04A1, DV04B1, DV04C1.
4- Each phase of DHS might have different set of questions. Individual countries may include questions that are not part of the standard questions.
5- This question DV16 is recoded D115Y.

If you are planning to look at the domestic violence variables for multiple countries, you may find the documentation on the IPUMS-DHS website very helpful. Let's say you want to look at which countries include a given question about violence/abuse from a woman's husband/partner:

1)Go to idhsdata.org
2) Click on "Select data"
3) Choose "Women" as the unit of analysis
4) From the drop-down topics menu, click on "Domestic violence--Domestic violence from husband/partner"
This will bring up the following variable display. An X means that the variable is available for the sample listed above it:
https://www.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id=dv_d vh

This way, you can identify which samples include the variables that interest you. Also, in IPUMS-DHS, data are recoded so that variable names and codes are consistent across samples, making analysis of change over time or across countries easy. If you click on a variable name, you can learn more about the variable, including its codes and frequencies, meaning, universe (who was asked the question), and question wording. You can select the samples and variables you want to make a free customized data file for analysis, if you log in with your DHS user name email and password.

Other drop-down menus in the domestic violence group show the availability of variables on related topics, such as attitudes toward domestic violence, violence from others (not partner/husband), sexual abuse, physical abuse while pregnant, and help-seeking behavior. You can display results for only those samples with the domestic violence module or only to countries that interest you if you use the "Select samples" tool.

I hope this helps.

Hello,
I am using the datas of Haiti. I have a problem with the sample in the reports for IPV. I found the sample for the domestic violence but i can't find the logic that they use to calculate the sample related to IPV. According to me, teh sample for IPV must be the difference between the sample for domectic violence and the single women. That means i leave the never united women out my sample. I attach to this message a file where you can have an idea of my problem, for example, because the report presents less case than my calculation.

Then, i don't now if someone can help please.Thank you a lot

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Kerry MacQuarrie:

Sampling for the Domestic Violence module is a little different than the sampling for the individual woman's questionnaire. First, whereas EVERY eligible woman per household is selected for the individual woman's questionnaire, only ONE eligible woman per household is selected at random for the Domestic Violence. We do this for ethical reasons to protect respondents. Secondly, the Domestic Violence module is often implemented in a sub-sample of selected households. In the Haiti 2016-17 DHS (EMMUS-VI), this was a two-thirds sub-sample, i.e. two out of every three selected households included the module.

Women are selected for the Domestic Violence module regardless of marital status. Both unmarried and married women respond. That is why you see a mixture of marital statuses in your tabulation of v044. However, many questions are relevant only for currently married or formerly married women because they ask about marital control and emotional, physical, or sexual violence perpetrated by their current/most recent spouse. Other questions are relevant for never-married women and married women alike. If you review the questionnaire in Annexe E of the Final Report, you can follow the skip pattern to see which questions are asked of which women.

Finally, the numbers of women that you see in the Final Report are weighted numbers. They are weighted by either v005 if it is a variable for all women or weighted by d005 if it is a variable in the domestic violence module. This sample weight accounts for the different sampling probability and non-response rate in the Domestic Violence module. (Note: when using either v005 or d005, divide by 1000000).
