Hello,

I want to uniquely identify subdistricts ("tehsils") in the 1992-23 NFHS. The country-specific variable SHTEHSIL contains 58 unique values, but these repeat across districts and it seems like there are many more subdistricts than that given the 56 unique districts. I just wanted to confirm if the unique identifier for tehsils is a concatenation of the variables SHDIST and SHTEHSIL, or is there a different way to do it?

Also, the NFHS Data File (Word doc) says the variable SHTOWN, which identifies town or village, is in the dataset, but it's not in the household recode file. Is this variable located elsewhere?

Thank you,

Paola

Thank you for your response. Just to clarify my question, is the unique district identifier the concatenation of state and shdist? And, is the unique subdistrict (tehsil) identifier the concatenation of state, shdist and shtehsil?

Thank you,
Paola

Sorry for the separate replies, but I was also wondering if there are tehsil names available for the subdistricts for NFHS1 and NFHS2 so that they can be matched?
Thank you,
Paola

Here's a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Fred Arnold:

To obtain a unique identifier for tehsils, it would be best to concatenate three variables: HV024 (the state code), SHDIST and SHTEHSIL.

You're correct that there is no variable SHTOWN in the household recode file. The NFHS Data documentation file (Word doc) incorrectly listed that variable, and it will be deleted from the documentation file soonest.

Thank you for your response.

I have two more questions I'd like help with. Are there names available for subdistricts (tehsils) in NFHS1 AND NFHS2 so that they can be matched? Also, do the tehsil codes match those in India's 1991 census? I've seen this information available for districts and I am wondering if it is also available for subdistricts.

Thank you,
Paola

Dear User,
Here is a response from one of our Senior DHS Specialists, Fred Arnold:
Quote:
The names of the tehsils are not available for NFHS-1 or NFHS-2, and the tehsil codes do not match the 1991 Census codes.

Thank you for your post.

Hi,
I have a related question. My research is focusing on Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. How can I identify which districts or tehsils are near Bhopal and which ones are far in the Madhya Pradesh dataset?
Thank you,
Hadley
