I am wondering about the difference between data sets within Guatemala 1998-99. The 'Height and Weight Score' variables hc70, hc71, hc72, hc73 and in 'Children's Recode' variables hw5, hw 8 and hw11 are both children under 6 years, there identification numbers match, yet the values are not the same. I can't visually see any pattern of scew or shift in distribution so I was wondering what is going on with those variables?

Thanks,

I believe that in the 98 DHS, the hw5/8/11 variables use the old CDC z-score standards, and the hc70s use the new WHO standards. You should be able to check in the recode manual on the DHS site. In general, the new WHO standards are considered superior (basically, they are derived from a much larger and more carefully constructed sample of child heights).
