Based on the DHS Program's sexual violence guidelines (link below), there are a few variables that measure exposure to sexual violence. Variable d124 refers to non-partner sexual violence in the past year while d125 refers to sexual violence (regardless of the perpetrator) in the lifetime. There is also the d105 series that collects information on lifetime and past-year sexual violence by an intimate partner. If I'm understanding this all correctly, that means the DHS collects information on:

- Lifetime and past-year intimate partner sexual violence (d105 series)
- Past-year non-partner sexual violence (d124)
- Lifetime sexual violence, regardless of perpetrator (d125)

My questions are:
1) Does d125 refer to sexual violence by any perpetrator or sexual violence by a non-partner? The labeling is mixed across the forum/documentation/other websites, so I just want to confirm.
2) Is there a variable that refers to lifetime non-partner sexual violence, or is d124 the only non-partner specific question available?
3) Similarly, is there a variable that measures past-year sexual violence, regardless of perpetrator, or is d125 the only partner-unrestricted question?

I'm hoping to breakdown lifetime sexual violence into partner vs. non-partner violence, so any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Following is a response from DHS Research Analysis, Jeff Edmeades and Rachael Church:

Thank you for pointing out these discrepancies, and we apologize for the delay in getting back to you. Please see the answers to your questions below:

1) Does d125 refer to sexual violence by any perpetrator or sexual violence by a non-partner? The labeling is mixed across the forum/documentation/other websites, so I just want to confirm.

The documentation on this is inconsistent we appreciate you pointing this out. d125 refers to sexual violence by any non-partner only (anyone except partner), ever in the lifetime.

2) Is there a variable that refers to lifetime non-partner sexual violence, or is d124 the only non-partner specific question available?

d125 refers to sexual violence by any non-partner only, ever in the lifetime. See response to point 3 for more details on d124.

Here are some additional clarifications that should be helpful if you want to compare partner to non-partner violence, both in terms of lifetime exposure and over the 12 months prior to the survey:
• To look at lifetime combined sexual violence, by a NON-PARTNER ever: d125
• To look at lifetime combined sexual violence, by a PARTNER, ever: combine d108 (current/most recent partner) + d130b (any previous partner, for those married/in-union more than once)

• To look at lifetime combined sexual violence, ANY PERPETRATOR, ever: combine d125 (non-partner) + d108 (current/most recent partner) + d130b (any previous partner, for those married/in-union more than once)

3) Similarly, is there a variable that measures past-year sexual violence, regardless of perpetrator, or is d125 the only partner-unrestricted question?

d124 refers to sexual violence by any non-partner in the last 12 months and is a subset of women reporting "yes" on d125. Note that d124 only covers sexual intercourse, not sexual intercourse or any sexual acts.

Here are some additional clarifications that should be helpful if you want to compare partner to non-partner violence, both in terms of lifetime exposure and over the 12 months prior to the survey:
• To look at sexual violence in the last 12 months, by NON-PARTNER: d124
• To look at sexual violence in the last 12 months, by PARTNER: combine d105h,i,k (current/most recent partner) + d130b (any previous partner, for those married/in-union more than once)
• To look at sexual violence in the last 12 months, by ANY PERPETRATOR: combination of d130b + d105h,i,k + d124
For additional examples of how the violence questions can be combined, please also check the Github repository, particularly for the domestic violence indicators that are typically included in survey final reports, which can be found here.
Please post again if you still have questions.
