Hello,

I have a clarificatory question. Variables v731 and v704a describe the employment status of women and their husbands, respectively, in the last 12 months. So is it the case that those who are currently working have also worked in the last 12 months? I mean when we say last 12 months, is it the month before the interview month or the day before the interview?

The following questions on this topic are asked of women in NFHS-5:
Q911: "Aside from your own housework, have you done any work in the last seven days?"
If Q911 is NO, then Q912 asks: "As you know, some women take up jobs for which they are paid in cash or kind. Others sell things, have a small business or work on the family farm or in the family business. In the last seven days, have you done any of these things or any other work?"
If Q912 is NO, then Q913 asks:
"Although you did not work in the last seven days, do you have any job or business from which you were absent for leave, illness, vacation, maternity leave or any other such reason?" If Q913 in NO, then Q914 asks:
"Have you done any work in the last 12 months?"
Similarly, Q907 in the Woman's Questionnaire asks "Has your husband done any work in the last 7 days?" If the answer is NO, Q908 asks:
"Has your husband done any work in the last 12 months?"
None of these questions define exactly what is meant by "12 months", so we just accept whatever answer is given.
If the woman or her husband did any work in the last 7 days, then she/he also worked in the last 12 months. Therefore, any work in the last 7 days or in the last 12 months is considered to be work in the last 12 months.
