Hello,

I am using the 2018 Nigeria DHS and would like to to find out how I can identify men and women from the same household or married in the dataset.

1. That is, how do I link each man to his wife/wives and vice versa.
2. How do I compare responses that are reported from husband and wife from the same household or in married to each other.
3. What are the couple identifiers linking men and women in marital relationships together?
4. How can I identify men and women in intimate relationship from the data rather that analyzing them separately.

Your prompt response will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Following is response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

DHS always prepares a couples' file (CR). Co-resident women and men are linked using v034 and mv034*, respectively. The data for the two partners are put onto a single record. If a man names multiple partners, there is a record for each couple, with the man's data repeated. Please check that file and let us know if it does not meet your needs.
