For Rwanda DHS 2019-2020, the (unweighted) tabulation of variable 'v044' gives the number of women who were selected and actually interviewed for 'Domestic Violence' module were 2,788. For the variable 'd105a' (ever been pushed etc. by husband/partner) 841 records are coded as missing (.) i.e. these women were never in an intimate relationship with men. Hence, the number of women who were never in an intimate relationship with men were 841 and there were 1,947 women who were and answered questions pertaining to intimate partner violence. However, for the variable 'v701' (husband/partners education level) 1,122 records are coded as missing (.). So there were 281 records for which husband/partners education level is missing, is that correct?
Thanks

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

A dot (.) in Stata means Not Applicable, or NA. It does not mean "missing", as in No Response or NR. With very few exceptions, the only time a case has a dot is when the question was not asked, because the response to some earlier question(s) made them ineligible for the question.

Thank you so much!

However, I still need some help please in understanding as to why for 281 women the response to the question "husband/partners education level" (v701) is 'not applicable' i.e. coded as dot, when 1,947 women answered the question on "ever been pushed etc. by husband/partner" (d105a) please? So, there were 1,947 women who had ever been in a relationship, but for 281 women, out of these 1,947 the response is coded as not applicable.
Thank you indeed!

Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

Have you looked at the skip pattern in the questionnaire? A distinction is made between (a) women who currently have a partner (b) women who ever had a partner. Some of the women who are in (b) will not be in (a). The questionnaire is in an appendix to the final report. Go through the DV module from beginning to end and you should find which questions are for (a) and which are for (b).
