Hello
I am looking at Ethiopia 2016, which has 25 stratification units or strata (V023).
In some regions there are two strata, just urban and rural. In other regions there are two or more rural strata. What I would like to know, is whether the individuals in each strata are from the same geographic area?
e.g. Are the individuals in Tigray/Urban from several towns and cities, or are they from one large city in Tigray?
e.g. Are the individuals in the three different urban strata in Oromia (nos. 9, 10 and 11) from three distinct rural areas in Oromia
If this is the case, it would be most helpful to see the different strata shown on a map. Do you know if such a map exists?
Many thanks
Janet

Thank you so much for your reply.
Yes, I have seen the guidance in DHS on how stratification units are selected, but I hope you don't mind if I ask for further clarification.
The individuals in each strata are from the same region, and of the same type (urban or rural). I have three questions;
1) Are the urban strata taken from a range of urban areas within the same region e.g. in the case of Ethiopia 2016, strata 3 is Afar Urban, and strata 4 is Afar Rural. Are the clusters/individuals in AFar Urban from a range of urban locations within Afar, or are they from one urban location etc.?
2) Where there are more than one rural strata in a region (in Ethiopia 2016 this is the case for Amhara, Oromia and SNNPR) how are the clusters/individuals within it located? Do these strata reflect the zones/districts within the region they are in?
3) In these areas where there are more than one rural strata in the region, if they are not divided geographically or by administrative boundaries e.g. by zones/districts, is there any other grouping or selection method used?
Thanks in advance,
Janet
