1 - that is a fine way to calculate maternal age at birth

2 - see the birth order variable BORD (see BORD and BIDX in the recode manual: http://www.dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/DHSG4/Recode6_DHS_22March 2013_DHSG4.pdf )
