This is a multiple occurring variable. Each occurrence of every such variable must have its own name because statistical packages do not generally support the use of arrays or subscripts. HV106$1 is the educational level of the first person in the household schedule, HV106$22 is the educational level of the 22nd person or last person in the household schedule.

In general, all the standard variables (such as HV106) are comparable across surveys and across years of surveys, since the categories of the variable are the same.
