Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
To find variables such as these you can open the PR file and (in Stata) search with a statement such as "lookfor hyper diastolic blood diabetes". I tried that for the Ghana surveys and all I could find was data from blood tests for malaria and HIV in some of the surveys, such as the Ghana MIS's.
Usually if there are tests the results will be presented in the final report, in a chapter near the end, on chronic diseases, for example. You can also search for keywords in the pdf file.
Sometimes there is a plan to include biomarkers but they are dropped before fieldwork because of cost or because of technical issues, such as not being able to find labs that can take on the required volume of work.
If you find test results in the report but cannot find the corresponding variables, let us know. The variables CAN be tricky to locate, but if there's nothing relevant in the report, you can be pretty sure that the tests were not done and there are no relevant variables in the data files.
