Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
Hi Laurie--A dot (".") in Stata means NA or Not Applicable--that is, the question was not asked. It is not "missing" in the sense of NR or No Response.
The Kenya surveys had long and short versions of the questionnaire. See pages 3-4 of the main report. Also, this has come up on the forum in other posts about the Kenya surveys.
The selection was random, in alternating households. The long form was administered in households selected for the men's interview.
