Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

The measurement of height and weight is done as part of the household survey, and the results are in the PR file as well as the KR file. That is, any child in the KR file with anthropometry data is also in the PR file, which has the household characteristics, so you can get household characteristics more directly than with the merge you did.

You can look at the final report for the survey(s) you are using. The standard tabulation plan includes some covariates. Maybe other users will have suggestions. DHS staff mostly provide help with specific technical questions, rather than research strategies.
