Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

The survey-specific variable s231a in this Gabon survey refers to the lifetime number of miscarriages, abortions, or stillbirths. It is preceded by v228, which is 1 if the woman ever had a terminated pregnancy (that is, a pregnancy that did not end in a live birth). If you open tie IR file and enter "tab s231a v228,m" you will see that v228 is the filter for s231a.
