Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

I cannot take the time to search all the Kenya surveys since 1998, but I looked at the child file for the 2022 survey (the Stata file is KEKR8BFL.dta). Here is what came up after I entered "lookfor bleed":

. lookfor bleed

              storage display value
variable name type format label variable label
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
v3a08w byte %8.0g V3A08W reason not using: changes in menstrual bleeding
m42i byte %8.0g M42I during pregnancy: bleeding
m78g byte %8.0g M78G during first 2 days health provider: discuss vaginal bleeding
sgc8ca byte %8.0g SGC8CA effects of circumcision - heavy bleeding

Are any of these variables what you are looking for? You could search the other surveys since 1998 in the same way.

Also, in the same data file I entered "lookfor section". Here is what came up, along with a tabulation of v401:

. lookfor section

              storage display value
variable name type format label variable label
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
v401 byte %8.0g V401 last birth a caesarean section
m17 byte %8.0g M17 delivery by caesarean section
m17a byte %8.0g M17A na - timing on decision for caesarean section
m80 byte %8.0g M80 pregnancy outcome for this section

. tab v401

last birth |
a caesarean |
    section | Freq. Percent Cum.
------------+-----------------------------------
         no | 13,456 87.96 87.96
        yes | 1,842 12.04 100.00
------------+-----------------------------------
      Total | 15,298 100.00

V401 is a no/yes variable

If you have questions about IPUMS you will have to contact IPUMS. We are not familiar with the IPUMS files--but thanks for using DHS data.
