Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
You are asking about the variable shnfhs2 in the HR and PR files. It has this distribution (weighted) in the NFHS-5 HR file:
. tab shnfhs2 [iweight=hv005/1000000]
house type |
(as defined |
in nfhs-2 |
and 3) | Freq. Percent Cum.
------------+-----------------------------------
kachha | 33,560.144 5.76 5.76
semi-pucca | 210,073.26 36.06 41.82
pucca | 338,908.54 58.18 100.00
------------+-----------------------------------
Total | 582,541.94 100.00
I googled and found the following. You could do the same sort of thing for more detail.
"Kutcha houses are created with eco-friendly and natural materials, while pucca homes are made of materials such as steel, cement, iron, and bricks. Kutcha homes are vulnerable to disasters, breakage, and damages, and therefore require frequent repairs. They are temporary structures in most cases."
