Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

I am looking at this file (IAPR7EFL.dta) and don't see what you are referring to. The only BMI variable is hc73, which refers to children. The label (HC73) includes the following special codes:

. label list HC73
HC73:
9996 height out of plausible limits
9997 age in days out of plausible limits
9998 flagged cases

I don't see ".a". Please be more specific.
