Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:
Looking at the labels for these s* variables, and then using keywords to search the women's questionnaire, it appears that most of the questions describe the mother and were part of the domestic violence module (for women with sviolen=1) or FGM module (for women with sfgm=1)--for example, the questions on fistula. These variables are copied from the IR file for mothers.
Many variables refer to children's immunizations, but they appear to be superfluous--that is, they match exactly with the usual variables. For example s1508b ("had BCG") is the same as h2 except that s1508b is coded NA (a dot) for most children. You would definitely want to use h2 rather than s1508b. The same applies to all the other s* variables on immunizations.
