Following is a response from our Senior Sampling Statistician, Ruilin Ren:

The sample size of Bangladesh DHS 2011 was much larger than the BDHS 2007 because the government of Bangladesh wanted more reliable estimates on immunization, anthropometry and childhood mortality rates (CMR) at regional level (moreso for CMR). Instead of producing CMR for the last 0-9 years at regional level like in all DHSs, the government requested CMR estimation for the last 0-4 years at national level, as well as at regional level.

The BDHS 2011 might be the only survey where DHS has produced CMR for the last 0-4 years at regional level. This mainly explains the considerable increase of the BDHS 2011 sample size, compared to BDHS 2007.
