Following is response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:
Which NFHS are you using? Do you have the data file? You can explore which variables are in the data by looking at the questionnaire (in an appendix to the final report) and by opening the data file. In the IR file, using Stata, you can enter lines such as "describe v5*" and "describe s3*" to find relevant variables. You can identify variables that have "sex" in the variable label with "lookfor sex". However, you do need to check the distributions, as you have already done with s315 and v525. In my experience with the NFHS data files, these variables are not consistent with one another.
