There were no questions on violence against women in the 1992-93 National Family Health Survey. In the 1998-99 NFHS-2, there were only four questions related to domestic violence (Questions 514-517).
Question 514 was a general question about the woman's opinion about the justification for wife beating. It has nothing to do with her own experience.
Questions 515-517 are related to her own experience with violence. Question 515 asks "Since you completely 15 years of age, have you been beaten or mistreated by any persons?"
IF YES, Question 516 asks "Who has beaten you or mistreated you physically?
Question 518 asks "How often have you been beaten or physically mistreated in the last 12 months: Other, a few times, many times, or not at all?"
NFHS-2 has only the above four questions on domestic violence, and it does not include a full module on domestic violence like subsequent NFHS surveys have.
It's always best to check the questionnaires in the back of each NFHS national report before looking for information on a specific topic in the NFHS datasets.
