Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

DHS follows the definitions and procedures of the country for variables such as type of place of residence and occupation. I believe some countries allow "student" as an occupational category, but looking at Cameroon, the country you are working with, that does not seem to be the case.

You could probably get some information from the questions and categories in the questionnaire itself, but I looked at the data files and it appears that information about current school attendance, at any level and at any age, is part of the household survey. You could merge the IR and PR files and match occupation (v716 and v717 in the IR file) with current school attendance (sh17a in the PR file). That may be the best way to see whether students (age 15+) were included in the occupational distribution. You could do something similar for men using the MR and PR files.
