Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

The choice of term would depend on what you are talking about. We refer to "testing status" to mean whether the person ever had an HIV test (other than a test as part of the survey--the 2014 survey included an HIV test for eligible respondents). "HIV status" refers to whether the test done as part of the survey had a negative or positive result.

If you are analyzing the variables used in tables 13.11.1 and 13.11.2 in the main report, then it's testing status. If you are analyzing hiv03 in the AR file from the survey, then it's HIV status.
