Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:

I recommend that you switch from the HR file (with one record per household) to the PR file (with one record for each household member). _01 through _20 are the line numbers of the household members.

You can also use the KR file for data on children and their mothers.

If a variable in a Stata file is coded with a dot (.), that means "Not applicable" or NA. It does not mean "missing". For example, if someone is outside the age range for a malaria test, their code is NA. Please check previous forum posts and answers and the Guide to DHS Statistics. Also the questionnaire in an appendix to the main report on the survey you are using, and chapter 1 of the report.
