Following is a response from DHS Research & Data Analysis Director, Tom Pullum:
You can only do this kind of match if both the child and the child's father are in the household. If they are, the the line number of the father is given by hv114 on the child's record (if the child is age 0-17) in the household. hv001 hv002 hv114 for the child will match with hv001 hv002 hvidx for the father in the PR file and mv001 mv002 mv003 in the MR file. The child with hv001 hv002 hvidx in the PR file will match with hv001 hv002 b16 in the KR or BR file. This is a relatively complicated merge but it can be done.
Whether you merge the child with the father using the PR file for the father or the MR file for the father depends entirely on whether the variables you want are in the PR file or the MR file. You may have more flexibility if you use the MR file, because (usually) everything about the father that is in the PR file will also be in the MR file.
