Greetings,

Below are some brief suggested edits for the DHS Domestic Violence module.

Best,
Jocelyn

REVISION
The introductory statement in the Domestic Violence Module seems to be over-promising, extending beyond the realm of control of the researchers.
Current wording: "Let me assure you that your answers are completely confidential and will not be told to anyone and no one else in your household will know that you were asked these questions."
Suggested revision: "I would like to assure you that your answers are completely confidential and only our research team will be able to see them. We will not tell anyone in your household that you were asked these questions."

REVISION
DV04 Current wording: "Did your (last) (husband/partner) insult you or make you feel bad about yourself?" The second part of this question is more about the respondent's internal reaction than actions of the other person. I suggest offering specific behaviors, and wording that addresses the perceived intention of the partner.
Suggested revision:
"Did your (last) (husband/partner) insult you, call you names, or say things to belittle or hurt you?"

REVISION
DV22A & B - I suggest separating these into three parallel questions, so we can learn about sexual violence experienced by the respondent in a) childhood, b) adolescence and c) adulthood. Age cutoffs could be provided based on the formal age of adulthood in each country.

REVISION
DV30 Current wording: "As far as you know, did your father ever beat your mother?" This question could be made more specific to what the respondent actually witnessed in childhood and adolescence, and broadened to include guardians beyond the father/mother.
Suggested revision: "Before age XX (age of adulthood in the country), did you ever hear or see physical violence, such as hitting or slapping, between your parents or other people who raised you?"
