Following is a response from DHS Senior Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:

There appears to be an unusual construction of v133 in this survey. I can get a match with the following commands to construct v133:

gen v133=0
replace v133=v107    if v106==1
replace v133=v107+ 6 if v106==2
replace v133=v107+12 if v106==3

replace v133=v107+ 5 if v106==2 & a110>=23 & a110<=37
replace v133=v107+11 if v106==3 & a110>=23 & a110<=37

The last two lines will account for the problem you observed. In effect, primary schooling is counted for five years of school for women age 23-37 and as six years of school for women below and above that age range. Secondary school is counted as six years throughout. It is possible that there was a change in the educational system that affected women currently age 23-37 (at the time of the survey), and that change was subsequently reversed. I do not have time to check whether this is the correct explanation and whether, if it is correct, it also produced a similar recoding for this birth cohort in other surveys in Egypt. Perhaps someone has another interpretation.
