Another way to identify variables of interest and which samples they are in is to look at the variable display on the IPUMS-DHS website. For example, you might want to see which samples include questions about attitudes toward domestic violence. Note the information at the following link, in which an X indicates that the sample directly above includes this variable:
https://internal.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id =dv_att

If you want to see which samples include variables about household decision-making, see below:
https://internal.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id =dec_dec
and
https://internal.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id =dec_other

Also potentially relevant are variables relating to attitudes toward sex, including when a woman can refuse sex:
https://internal.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id =sex_att

A few samples include questions about attitudes toward marriage and education for sons versus daughters:
https://internal.idhsdata.org/idhs-action/variables/group?id =demog_kidrear

It's worth exploring the website to find other variables that you think fit your own definition of gender roles and attitudes. Also, you can use the Search tool to find out detailed information about variables you've already identified as of interest. And once you have decided which samples and variables interest you, you can log in with your DHS email and password and download a customized data file for your research project.
