Keep in mind just how the information for the KR child recode files was collected. Women of childbearing age are asked about their own children, born in the last 3,4, or 5 years, on a wide range of topics including antenatal care, vaccinations, recent illnesses, etc. The data in the KR file is basically a rearrangement of the women's data reporting on her own children, not some random female respondent in the household. Therefore, the only way that the mother identified in the KR files could not be the child's own mother would be if she misrepresented their relationship when asked about her OWN CHILDREN, and this doesn't seem likely to happen very often.
