A response from Malaria expert, Cameron Taylor replied as follows:

Hi Naomi,
Thank you for the word document as that better gives us a better idea of your research questions.
To answer your questions about missing variables
1. Proper use of anti-malarial drugs in malaria prevention- the measures are in the recode book, but not in the dataset
• You can find antimalarial use in the KR file (CMKR60FL) as antimalarial questions are asked to women in the women's questionnaire about children <5 years of age. The variables for antimalarials in the Cameroon dataset are ml13 variables.
2. Healthcare preference (traditional vs modern)
• We do not ask direct questions about healthcare preference in the questionnaire. However, you could potentially use a proxy indicator such as the source for antenatal care (traditional vs modern) in the IR file (CMIR60FL). Or you could examine the source of care for fever/cough for children <5 years of age in the KR file.
3. Malaria Outcome - The dissertation mentions the results of the rapid test. The dataset does not contain data for the Malaria measure that resulted from the rapid test. The only Malaria outcome measure was based on final measurement.
• In examining the PR file for Cameroon it looks like there is a country specific variable for the result of the malaria rapid test. The variable you could examine is sh418 in the PR file
4. Health-seeking behavior
• I would consult the questionnaire for the best variables/questions that could be used to examine this as this is a broad topic.
I hope this answers some of your initial questions. I am concerned that some of your research questions won't be able to be answered with DHS datasets. I would highly suggest that you closely examine the Cameroon DHS questionnaire to get a better understanding of who is asked particular questions relating to malaria. I would also suggest that you look over past research papers that have been written with DHS data to get a better idea of what research questions are feasible with our data. You can use our publication search tool to look over past analytical studies, working papers, and comparative reports.
