Can the design of the DHS and/or MICS questionnaire be improved to better capture the information required to monitor vaccination coverage? If so, how?

It would be interesting to get feedback on the pros/cons of structuring the immunization section of the questionnaire to avoid the back and forth between the home-based abstraction question/grid and the questions for capturing maternal recall of child's vaccination history. See attached. Such a structure would seemingly avoid the long pause that is created as the interviewer scans the home-based record for information.

Just as Bo mentioned that we did not speak much during the sessions about form re-design, there was not too much discussion about avoiding field abstraction from home-based records through imaging. There was brief mention and some seem to feel apprehensive due to privacy concerns, but surely a shield could be created to avoid capturing personal identifiers beyond the survey assigned identification number for each child / mother / household / cluster combination.

There is (well, perhaps I should say "may be") the potential for a fair amount of field work to test different approaches for best capturing images to ensure clear capture when operating in areas of low light or with documents that are of compromised quality in the field.

Hi Trevor,
Just wanted to check back with you (and Attila) whether there were ever any follow-up discussions on a form redesign for the immunization module as you begin testing for your respective next rounds.

Hi David,

We had updated the design for DHS7 a few years ago, and that update is reflected in the version that is in the current version of the women's questionnaire found at http://www.dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-DHSQ7-DHS -Questionnaires-and-Manuals.cfm. This was a fairly substantial revision, but not as extensive as you proposed. The design in the DHS7 questionnaire has not been used in many countries yet, so we don't have too much experience with it yet. At present I don't believe there are any plans to further update this module before the next round of DHS (2018), and we haven't discussed the module recently with the MICS team. We are open to further discussion, but it hasn't happened to date.

Regards. Trevor
