I would like to match the Zambia DHS from 2001 with data from another data set at the district level. I see district was asked in the 1996 DHS and that district can be inferred from the GPS data in the 2007 DHS, but that district is not available in the surveys for the 2001 data and the GPS data is not available.

Is there any internal data on district that could be shared? Or could the unshared GPS data be used to infer district?

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks for your post. No GPS data was collected for the Zambia 2001-02 DHS. I'm attaching an Excel file that gives the region (province) and district names for each of the clusters in the Zambia 2001 DHS. The worksheet named "Instructions" explains what each of the fields are. You can join the names to the household recode file based on the hv001 field. I hope this information helps with your research.

Dear Josh,

Is the Excel file you attached earlier named "Zambia DHS district names" the one I need to spatially join with Egypt's GIS DHS data in QGIS? If yes, please advise re from where I can get such a file for Egypt.

Thank you.

Amira

Dear Amira,

The Excel that we provided for the Zambia 2001 DHS gives the district names for the clusters. We provided this because no GPS data was collected for that survey. For the Egypt 2008, 2005, 2003, 2000, 1995, and 1992 surveys, GPS data is available, so we don't provide the district names.

You'll need to import the GPS dataset(s) into GIS software such as ArcMap or QGIS and spatially join the displaced cluster locations to a polygon shapefile of Egypt's district boundaries. The process and considerations of performing the spatial join are explained in the following thread: http://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.php?t=msg&th=70&am p;start=0&S=fc86c4c18d75db2e7f429e8a753fddb2. If you don't have a shapefile of the districts, there are several sources for boundaries including GADM (http://www.gadm.org/) and Humanitarian Response (https://cod.humanitarianresponse.info/).

However, we do advise caution when conducting your analysis at smaller administrative levels, as the surveys were not designed to be representative below the DHS regions level. Also, due to the displacement of the GPS data, it was possible that some clusters were displaced across district boundaries. For more information about our geographic displacement procedure, you may be interested in consulting our recent publications in the Spatial Analysis Reports series: http://dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-SAR7-Spatial- Analysis-Reports.cfm and http://dhsprogram.com/publications/publication-SAR8-Spatial- Analysis-Reports.cfm.

If this has not answered your question adequately, please reply.

Josh

I would like to have location information at constituency/ward level for the Zambia 2001 DHS data. Can you share such information as in the shared district-level excel file in the previous posts?
I guess that the GPS data are no longer publicly available for some reason, since some papers using geolocations for their analysis were found. https://dhsprogram.com/data/dataset/Zambia_Standard-DHS_2002 .cfm?flag=0
Is there any way to still have access to the GPS dataset for 2001 survey?

Thank you so much in advance. Any information will be appreciated.

Hello, I'm having a similar situation.

I want to match the Peru DHS between 2000 and 2012 with another dataset at the district level. But there are only GPS data available between 2000-2009. Do you have any data for these years? Thank you very much.
