Strata specification across multiple surveys [message #9233] Thu, 25 February 2016 18:05 Go to next message

I am doing a pooled analysis across 31 recent DHS surveys, all from 2010 - present. I'm trying to set up the survey design for each survey; psu (v021) and denormalized weights are clear to me, but I'm having trouble determining with certainty what the correct strata variable to use for each survey is. I know that the most reliable way is to look in the final reports to see individual survey designs, but across this number (and variable languages), that's a challenge.

Based on what I've read in this forum, it seems that generally crossing district and urban/rural (ex. <group(v024 v025)>) is an appropriate methodology, but there are some instances where that is not correct, for example Bangladesh 2011, where there were 3 levels of stratification. Can v022 be used in general, but replaced with the cross of v024/v025 when it is missing? If not, is there a centralized list of strata across surveys that could be shared? Any other suggestions?

Many thanks for your help.

PS - The surveys I'm using are: Bangladesh 2011, Benin 2011-12, Comoros 2012, Congo Brazzaville 2011-12, Congo Democratic Republic 2013-14, Cote d'Ivoire 2011-12, Dominican Republic 2013, Egypt 2014, Gabon 2012, Ghana 2014, Guinea 2012, Haiti 2012, Honduras 2011-12, Indonesia 2012, Jordan 2012, Kenya 2014, Kyrgyz Republic 2012, Liberia 2013, Mali 2012-13, Namibia 2013, Nepal 2011, Niger 2012, Nigeria 2013, Pakistan 2012-13, Peru 2012, Sierra Leone 2013, Tajikistan 2012, Togo 2013-14, Uganda 2011, Yemen 2013 and Zambia 2013-14.

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:

A list of the strata in all surveys is being prepared. I'm sorry that it is not yet available. I will remind the person who is preparing it.

A cross of v024 and v025 will always be very close to correct. In some files, v022 is provided but is incorrect. If you just do "tab v022" or "codebook v022" and find that there are many (e.g. more than 70) values and only a small number of households (e.g. the households in two clusters) in each stratum, it means that v022 is not correct, and it will be safer to include v024 x v025. In some of the older surveys, a pairing of clusters was part of the design and somehow those pairs were incorrectly put into v022.

Your surveys are so recent that I think v022 will be correct or, at worst, missing. I don't think the previous paragraph will apply.

Thanks very much, Bridgette and Tom! The list of strata across surveys will be a great resource once it's completed.

Hi I was wondering if the list of the strata in all surveys had been already prepared. Thanks.

Has this list of strata been prepared?

Thanks.

Have the list of stratification been done for every country? Thanks.

I have a related question to the first post. I am confused as to which variable in DHS corresponds to strata. I use a large number of DHS surveys, including the older and the newer rounds. Although it has been often recommended
on the forum to generate strata using v024 and v025 there are surveys with a more complex strata specification and given that I pull many countries together I would not like to make a mistake of incorrectly specifying the strata where they are not a combination of urban/rural and region.

Throughout the forum according to some responses, the recommendation was to use v022, in other responses v023. It looks like these variables are similar but not exactly the same. Would you be able to clarify what the difference between the v022 and v023 is and which one is closer to representing strata?

Thank you!
