Dear DHS Specialist,

I have merged IR (Women's) file with the KR (Kids') file using the following command. merge 1:m v001 v002 v003 using KR. It merges properly, however, i am unable to get Unique Identifier for every child. There is a repetition of child number in the merged file. How can i get the Unique Identifier. I am working on Pakistan's DHS 2006-07 and 2012-13.

Regards and Thanks,
Faiz

Following is a response from Senior DHS Stata Specialist, Tom Pullum:

The combination v001 v002 v003 will identify the mother. A mother will appear once in the IR file, but she will appear multiple times in the KR file, once for each child born in the past five years. The unique identifier for the child will be the combination v001 v002 v003 bidx. For a given mother, bidx will be 1, 2, etc., for the children born in the past five years.
