Dear DHS colleagues,
I am working on Nepal's Environmental and Health issues. For that I am using both Living Standard Survey and DHS data. I need to merge these two dataset somehow.
To merge (at least on the district level) I want the wealth index on Nepalese households by district (only for 1996 DHS). Does anybody have any information if it's possible?
I know that the geographic information is not available, and I actually do not need the household specific geographic data. I just want an average district level development indicator!
Thanks a lot,
Aparna

Dear User,
Here is a response from Dr. Shea Rutstein,
Quote:The wealth index file NPWI31 needs to be merged with the standard recode file NPIR31. Then means can be calculated for the clusters. However, I do not know to which district the clusters belong. There is also a variable SDEVREG, which gives the development regions, and SWARD, but I am not sure what it represents.
Please feel free to post again if you have additional questions. I will also refer your post to our GIS team to see if they can provide further assistance. Thanks!

To answer the piece regarding the district level in the Nepal 1996 DHS:
As you mention, this survey did not collect GPS data. Unfortunately, this greatly complicates analysis at levels lower than the representative regions used for the survey. The lowest representative regions are the subregions, which are a combination of the development and ecological regions (see: http://spatialdata.dhsprogram.com/boundaries/#view=map&c ountryId=NP&surveyId=86&level=3 for a map). As Dr. Rutstein mentioned, the SWARD variable exists in the dataset, but this is a survey-specific variable and does not necessarily align with any standard names for any lower level areas. If there is any possible way to link that variable to known areas, we do not have that information--you could inquire directly with the implementing agency to see if that is a possibility.
