I find unrealistic dates for the year of interview and other dates in the Nepal surveys. Even the dictionaries reference strange dates such as a date of interview being 2063. Please explain.

All standard date variables in the Nepal data file are in the Nepali Calendar. Since the new year starts on April 15, it is not possible to transfer dates listed in months and years exactly to our Gregorian Calendar (in order to do so, you would also need the day).

Here is some information on the Nepali calendar, also called: "Bikram Sambat Nepali Calendar" or "Nepali Patro". It is approximately 56 years and 8½ months ahead of the Gregorian calendar. The Nepalese New Year falls in the middle of April. Unlike Gregorian months, the lengths of Nepali months are not predetermined, and change from year to year, varying from 29 days to 32 days. So this Nepali calendar gives you the exact date with events and festivals of Nepal from 1970 to 2100 for both English calendar and Nepali calendar together. The Nepali calendar is also used in India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia.

The following web site has applications to convert Nepali to Western Calendar:
