Hi!

I am working with the NFHS III data. It provides specific caste names of all individuals and the household, but in a separate file. I want to merge it with one of the master files, say the couple recode file, IACR52FL. But there is no unique identifier in the castetribe file with which to merge it with any other data set. Could you assist me on how to do it?

Following is a response from Senior DHS Data Processing Specialist, Noureddine Abderrahim:

CTSTATE ( State ), CTPSU ( PSU ), CTHOUSE ( Household number ), and CTIND ( Individual ) are the identifiers of the cases in the Caste/Tribe data file that need to be used in conjunction with the variables V024, V001, V002, and V003 of the couple's file.

Dear Bridgette

I used the four variables told by you and merged the two data sets. However, the two data sets do not match completely. There are over 2000 unmatched entries in the couple data set. I am attaching the log file. Kindly look into it and suggest any solution if possible.

Regards
Komal

Following is a response from Senior DHS Data Processing Specialist, Noureddine Abderrahim:

The dropped cases might be incomplete cases that were excluded from the distributed data file but not from the Caste/Tribe file. Would you double check the numbers for the complete data file with the table 1.1 of the survey's final report?

Let us know if you still have problems.

Dear Bridgette,

I first of all converted the data in the couple recode from wide format to long format. Then i created a unique id for each entry. Due to polygamy, i had to drop 42 entries. After that, i merged this with the Caste/Tribe file, and then reconverted the data into wide format. Now, the caste information is missing for 1313 females and 1319 males. This effectively makes 2632 couples' information incomplete.
Is there a way to rectify this issue? i.e. can the missing caste data be obtained for the missing entries?

Thanks and regards
Komal

Following is a response from Senior DHS Data Processing Specialist, Noureddine Abderrahim:

Unfortunately, the survey is over and there is no way to go back to the survey respondents, and gather the missing information.
