I'm working with the Bangladesh 2011 DHS, and am trying to find the postnatal care for mother variables. In the recode file, these are indicated as M66-M69. Within the actual survey data, I can only find variable M66. M67, M68 and M69 appear to be missing, though they are not indicated as such in the individual recode documentation. However, looking at the questionnaire, and the 2011 Bangladesh Final Report, those variables (M67, M68 and M69) appear to have been collected. Note, I am not looking for the newborn postnatal care variables, M70-M73 - those are in the data set.
Where are the maternal postnatal care variables?

Here is a response from one of our Senior Data Processing Specialists, Noureddine Abderrahim, that should answer your question.
M68, M67, and M67 are questions asked in phase V of DHS as questions 455, 456, and 467 respectively. However, in DHS VI, they are no longer asked as standard questions. If a DHS VI survey includes these questions, they would be recoded as country specific questions. For country specific questions, the variables are generally named and coded in the same way as they were on the questionnaire. The variable will have a leading "SH" if the question was asked at the household level, a leading "S" if asked at the women's level, and a leading "SM" if asked at the men's level.

On the IPUMS-DHS website, I limited the variable display to samples for Bangladesh and pulled up the display of variables available related to postnatal checks (woman as unit of analysis). An X indicates that the variable is available in a given survey:

Note that some of these variables might have been given a different (country-specific) name in the original DHS files; IPUMS-DHS gives variables and responses that have the same meaning the same name and code across all surveys to make the data easier to analyze over time or across countries. If you click on the name of a variable, you can get more information about it, including the question wording and who was covered by this variable (the universe) in each survey.
Using the Search function to look for variables on the IPUMS-DHS website or looking at the availability of variables by sample within a topical area (e.g., postpartum checks) can save you time and help you plan your research.
