Hello there

We are Stata users and are working with the women's questionnaire in the 2010 survey.

We want to construct the 'strata' variable needed for the svy: command.

We are torn between using these options:

a)group (v024 v025) i.e. regions divided into urban/rural
b)group (v023 v025) v023 corresponds to the zones which the regions were collapsed into according to the
survey report
c) v024 (since it appears already to be disaggregated by region and possibly urban/rural)
d) v022 (this comes out the same as a) above and is labelled 'sample stratum number'

Thanks very much.

Dear User,
Here is a response from Dr. Tom Pullum:
Quote:
The strata for that survey are given by v022--which, as you say, is the same as v024 by v025.

Thank you!

I am working with the subset of this data that has values for C-reactive protein, about 25% of overall women. When I use v022 as the stratum variable (working in R) I get an error message because one of the stratum only has one or no values. Is there an alternative strata I can use? Would v023 and v025 be inappropriate?

Thanks for any advice.

This has been discussed in previous threads, such as this one:

http://userforum.dhsprogram.com/index.php?t=tree&th=1807 &goto=3738&S=343ce2e112b3f15f2b333eec712dc2cf#msg_37 38

"While using the singleunit(centered) parameter is one way around the problem of a stratum with a single unit, in general we recommend to regroup the strata with a similar strata and not use the singleunit parameter. In this case I would regroup strata 5 (Rajshahi city corp.) which only has the one cluster (after the selection for this estimation) with strata 11 (Rajshahi other urban). The difference in the results between the two approaches however will be tiny."

Obviously the details about which units to group together would be different, but the idea is the same: you can use the "singleunit" option or you can re-define that strata by joining it to another one.
