Hello,
I am working on Madagascar's dataset and for the variables V130 (religion), V131 (ethnicity), V704 (husband's occupation) and V716 (respondent occupation), I could not find the codes in the recode manual nor in the recode map. They only say the questions and the answers are country-specific. I looked at the additional information coming with the dataset (in MS word format after downloading the datasets) but it doesn't give further information about those. How can I find the codes for these variables for Madagascar's 2008 DHS?
Thank you in advance.
Hasina.

Dear User,
I looked at the questionnaires for the Madagascar DHS 2008-09 survey. Of the variables you mentioned, the only one which was not asked was the question about ethnicity (V131). It was marked as not applicable because it was not asked in the questionnaire. The other variables; V130, V704 and V716 all have codes. If you look at the frequencies, you will see the codes there. There are two sets of frequencies which are weighted and unweighted. I looked at MDIR51.FRWwhich are weighted frequencies.
For example for V130 Item V130: Religion
... tbd-name: '.RECODE5.REC11.V130'

Dear User,
I used Notepad (a text editor which comes with Windows Operating Systems) Clicked on File then Open. Notepad is looking for files with txt extension, but if you put *.* in the command line, it will list files with other extensions. I opened the file called MDIR51.FRW. I clicked on the file I was looking for. Then I clicked on Find (to get there click on Edit, then Find) and searched for V130. If you are working with SAS, you are most likely using MDIR52SD.zip. Best to unzip the files and if you want to look at the frequencies, you can use the method I just outlined above. I just now looked at V130 using MDIR51FL.FRW
