Hi,
I would like to know if there are unique village identifiers in NFHS3 ?
I am interested in such a variable to be able to implement village fixed effects in a regression framework, that is, I do not need to know where in a state a village is, but just differentiate a village from an other.

I would think the PSU (primary sampling unit) would be the appropriate level for spatial/regional fixed effects, especially since it doesn't appear you are merging in external, village-level data. It would at least be very close to what you want.

Actually - and I didn't know this either - it appears that a PSU is a village in the India 2005/6 survey at least. From page 12 of the Introduction to the survey report: http://dhsprogram.com/pubs/pdf/FRIND3/FRIND3-Vol1AndVol2.pdf
"A uniform sample design was adopted in all states. In each state, the rural sample was selected in two stages, with the selection of Primary Sampling Units (PSUs), which are villages, with probability proportional to population size (PPS) at the first stage, followed by the random selection of households within each PSU in the second stage."
