There is a variable called "memsleep Number of members per sleeping room" that was used in the construction of the Uganda 2011 DHS Wealth Index. I'm referencing the spreadsheet that's online that shows the variables used to construct the index.

Do you know how this variable was constructed?

Following is a response from Senior DHS Specialist, Trevor Croft:

Memsleep is the number of usual household members per sleeping room. The code in SPSS is below:

*{Members per sleeping room}.
if (hhusual=0) hhusual=hhslept.
if (AH117>0) memsleep=trunc(hhusual/AH117).
if (AH117=0) memsleep=hhusual.
if (missing(AH117) or AH117>=99 or memsleep>=98) memsleep=99.
variable labels memsleep 'Number of members per sleeping room'.
value labels memsleep 0 'Less than 1 per room'.
formats memsleep (f2.0).
missing values memsleep (99).

AH117 is the number of rooms used for sleeping.
