I'm trying to merge datasets from the Guinea 1999 DHS. Specifically, I want to match child health indicators in the KR recode to their record in the PR recode. The KR recode is missing the b16 variable, which identifies the child's line number. What other variable can I use to perform this merge, and what additional considerations need to be accounted for?

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

Unfortunately, it is not possible to identify the correct child in the PR file when b16 is missing from the KR file. We have tried alternatives and they are not reliable. However, it's likely that the variables you want are the household-level variables on water and sanitation, etc. that are on the mother's record in the PR file. You would match v001 v002 v003 for each child in the KR file with hv001 hv002 hvidx in the PR file. This would be a 1:m or m:1 merge because a woman can have more than one child in the KR file.

Note that the child's record in the KR file already includes most of the mother's variables that are in the IR file.

So to be clear: there is no b16 equivalent in the KR file for Guinea 1999?

That is correct.  There are only a few surveys with this problem, and this is one of them.

Thank you. For my research, I wanted to be able to say with confidence that we excluded this country-year because it was missing a key matching variable. Thanks to this exchange, I can now say that without it being a guess.

A list of all countries and years with matching issues (ex: missing B16) would be a helpful resource for researchers - does such a list exist?
