I am conducting research on women's empowerment, relative resources within partnerships, and intimate partner violence. I am particularly interested in including partner's alcohol consumption as a variable. Could anyone guide me on which dataset(s) or variable(s) from Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, or Mali capture information on partner's alcohol use? Thank you!

Thank you for submitting your question. Could you please provide some more detailed information so we can better advise you?
Can you let us know:
• Which survey you are using (Include country name and year)?
• Which data files you are referring to?
• Which software you are using (Stata, SPSS, R, etc.)?
If you are trying to match a Table in a final report, please also indicate which table and which estimate you are trying to match.

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

You are probably using the DV module in the IR file. It includes standard questions d113 and d114:

d113 byte %8.0g D113 husband/partner drinks alcohol
d114 byte %8.0g D114 frequency of husband/partner being drunk

If you are having trouble matching a table, please say specifically which table in which report and which number in the table.

Thank you so much for your help.

I have another question on the Domestic Violence weighting variable. I could not find d005 in the Gambia and Senegal IR file. So, I could not include it in the svyset command. Is there a way around that as the other countries I am working with all have d005 in the domestic violence module.

Thank you!

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

I find d005 in the IR files for both of the Gambia surveys. You will have to be more specific about which of the Senegal IR files you are looking at.

I am confident that every survey that includes the domestic violence d* variables will include d005.

Thank you so much and my apologies for not checking my files or citing the correct data files.

I got Gambia wrong. I actually meant the IR files for Guinea 2018 and Senegal Continuous DHS 2023. In both I cannot find d005 to construct weights.

Thanks for all you do.

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

The Guinea 2018 and Senegal 2023 surveys did not include the DV module. They have no "d" variables at all. The DV weight, d005, is only needed if the DV module was used.

I believe there may be some surveys in which the DV weight has the name d05 rather than d005. Otherwise, d005 is present in every IR file that has the "d" variables.

Domestic violence is violence that occurs within a family relationship or between members of a family. It is a serious social problem that affects the mental and physical health of the victims, often women and children. Domestic violence must be condemned and punished.Play slope game free.
