Dear DHS,

In the Cambodia DHS 2020-21 country report, on page 308, table 14.11, various types and combinations of intimate partner violence (IPV) disaggregated by marital status are provided i.e. Marital status: Never married (Currently has intimate partner, Had intimate partner) and Ever married (Married/living together, Divorced/separated/widowed).

I am unable to figure out what variable(s) were used (using Stata) to calculate IPV indices disaggregated by the marital status.

Secondly, how the sub-sample of women was selected using Stata for IPV that included all women with their intimate partner defined as:
"The term husband includes a partner with whom a woman is living as if married. Husband/intimate partner refers to the current husband for currently married women; the most recent husband for divorced, separated, or widowed women; the current intimate partner for never-married women who currently have an intimate partner; and the most recent intimate partner for never-married women who do not currently have an intimate partner but had one in the past".

Thank you so much!

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

Marital status is given by v501.  Below I will give the unweighted distribution for this survey and the codes (which are standard across surveys). All women except those with v501=0 are eligible (in terms of marital status) for the DV module. Currently married or living as married means v501 equals 1 or 2. Some of the questions refer to the current partner but some include earlier partners, for whom v501 can be 3, 4, or 5.

. tab v501

current marital status |      Freq.     Percent        Cum.

------------------------------------+----------------------- ------------

                     never in union |      4,616       23.68       23.68

                            married |     13,513       69.31       92.99

                living with partner |        242        1.24       94.23

                            widowed |        406        2.08       96.31

                           divorced |        645        3.31       99.62

no longer living together/separated |         74        0.38      100.00

------------------------------------+----------------------- ------------

                              Total |     19,496      100.00

. label list V501

V501:

           0 never in union

           1 married

           2 living with partner

           3 widowed

           4 divorced
