I am currently working on a research project that requires data on anemia from the Indonesia DHS 2017 dataset. However, after reviewing the data, I noticed that all values related to anemia are coded as not applicable or missing (e.g., coded as 999).

Could you kindly confirm whether anemia data were collected in the 2017 Indonesia survey? If so, could you please advise on how I might access this data or if there is another dataset where anemia-related variables are available?

I would greatly appreciate your assistance and guidance on this matter. Thank you for your time and support.

Best regards,
Alya Karina

Following is a response from DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

This survey did not include blood tests for measuring hemoglobin concentration. The data were never collected. If they had been collected, they would be provided in the data files. It is up to the survey management in participating countries to decide whether or not to include things like blood tests in a survey. The decision to omit hemoglobin was made by the implementing agency in Indonesia, not by DHS.
