Dear DHS-Team,

I would like to inquire about the current status of the updated Kenya DHS 2022 data. Over the past few months, there have been discussions regarding inconsistencies in the educational data, particularly with the variables V107 and V106.

In my analysis, I created a contingency table to compare V107 (highest year of education) and V106 (educational level) and noticed some discrepancies between the two variables. For example, there are cases where individuals with higher educational levels (V106 = 3) only have a few years of education recorded (V107 < 9). I'm a bit overwhelmed about how to proceed with these inconsistencies.

Have the corrected data been uploaded yet? I am working on an analysis examining the correlation between years of education and maternal child mortality, and I have noticed also some discrepancies between V107 (highest year of education) and V106 (educational level).

If the updated data are not yet available, could you please advise which of the two variables (V107 or V106) would be more appropriate for my analysis? I would greatly appreciate your insights on how best to handle these discrepancies to ensure accurate and reliable results.

Thank you so much for your prompt response. It would be great if the updated datasets could be available by the end of the week.

Regarding my other question, could you please clarify whether the variable V106 (educational level) is also affected by the inconsistencies, or is it accurate as is?

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

New versions of the data files for the Kenya 2022 DHS survey were uploaded on August 12. The constructed variables that you refer to have been corrected. There is no change to hv106, v106, or mv106.

The problems with the variables for years of schooling were uncovered here on the forum by users such as you. Thank you! Let us know if you still see inconsistencies.

Thank you very much for your responses.

I have now downloaded the new data and performed some initial calculations. However, I did not notice any differences between the results from the new datasets and the old ones. I also couldn't identify any differences within the datasets themselves.

Could you please confirm if the new datasets have indeed been updated? I downloaded them today from the Survey Data Files, and I am using the Births Recode dataset (Kenya) 2022 for my analysis.

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

Here is the statement from DP (data processing at DHS) of what was changed:

1. V131/MV131 Ethnicity. Some of the open ended responses for these variables were not recoded to the correct categories, and have been reviewed and corrected.
2. Variables containing the number of years of education in single years were incorrectly calculated for some cases. These have been corrected. The list of variables affected is shown below:

Variable Description
HV108 Single years of education household members
HV124 Single years of education at current school year household members
HV128 Single years of education at previous school year household members
V133 Single years of education female respondents
V715 Single years of education of spouse
MV133 Single years of education male respondents

I think that for your purposes, hv108 (in the PR file) or v133 (in the IR file) are most relevant. Are you saying that those variables have the same distribution in both the previous release and the latest release? Please let us know. If that's the case, maybe there was some mixup and we need to alert the DP staff.
