I wanted to know what is the cutoff value for the SB74 variable in the IR file to classify a woman as diabetic? Is it the random or fasting blood sugar?

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

The NFHS-5 includes the blood glucose level, sb74, but it is not used to make a diagnosis of diabetes. The variable s728a, "Currently has diabetes", is based on the respondent's self-report of whether she has ever been diagnosed with diabetes. You can look up how a physician might use the blood glucose level to inform a diagnosis of diabetes, but DHS, and the NFHS-5, do not specify or use any threshold.

Hi
Regarding diabetes, what is the use of the variable SB56 "Told high blood glucose on two or more occasions" in the IR file?
I mean to ask how we use this variable.
Can we get some meaning from this alone or this variable has to be used along with some other variable?

Following is a response from Senior DHS staff member, Tom Pullum:

This is a survey-specific question. A respondent will respond "yes" if a doctor or other provider told her, on two or more occasions, that she had a high blood glucose level. I am not a physician myself, but I assume that this suggests that the respondent has a higher risk of diabetes, but it is not the same as a diagnosis of diabetes.

You can look at the final report and possible other publications coming out of the NFHS to see whether this variable has been used. The original intention was to describe the prevalence of diabetes without clinical diagnoses. You can do anything you want with this variable.
